Description:

Fundamental concepts central to present-day effective systemic therapy will be described in this presentation. The connection between present day systemic therapies and research conducted during the 1950s and 1960s by the Palo Alto Group and the Mental Research Institute (MRI) will be described. Featured will be the contributions of Palo Alto Group members Gregory Bateson, Don Jackson, MD, John Weakland, Jay Haley, and William Fry. Seven specific, learnable concepts and techniques will be taught that make treatment more effective and efficient.

Educational Objectives:

1. Develop an operational understanding of communication / interaction focused theory and interviewing techniques derived from the Palo Alto Group.
2. Demonstrate understanding of skills for translating individual diagnostic labels into relationship interactions within the patient/client current living contexts of clients.
3. Describe asking relationship-focused questions to effectively and efficiently facilitate change.

Wendel A. Ray, Ph.D, is Hammond Endowed Professor of Education and Professor of Family System Theory in the Marriage & Therapy Program, at The University of Louisiana-Monroe (ULM). The former Director of the Mental Research Institute (MRI) in Palo Alto, California, as well as a former member of the MRI Brief Therapy Center, and the MRI Strategic Family Therapy Project, Dr. Ray continues to serve as an MRI Senior Research Fellow.
