The Basic Foot Print is a process model of change in therapy that represents and identifies Erickson’s method for change. It is a general umbrella under which we should be able to place any step of change or intervention. Encounters that follow the Basic Foot Print create change and any therapy that steps through these stages reflects Dr. Erickson’s approach and echoes his legacy. The steps are: matching/connecting, blending, utilizing, introducing ambiguity (disrupting stasis), reframing and co-creating outcomes. An in-depth understanding of steps within the Basic Footprint will be taught, demonstrated and practiced.
Educational Objectives:
- To describe the use of the Basic Foot Print for designing a goal- oriented treatment plan originating from a dynamic assessment of the client.
- To describe the solid process-logic behind each phase of the Basic Foot Print for change in therapy.

Stephen Lankton, MSW, DAHB, trained under Milton H. Erickson, M.D. from 1975 to 1979, and his efforts at promoting and interpreting Erickson’s approach to hypnosis and therapy at the highest academic levels resulted in the inclusion of chapters in several scholarly publications edited by other luminaries in the field. He is a LCSW psychotherapist in a private practice in Phoenix, Arizona, Lankton conducts workshops internationally (24 countries).
